Foods Birdies Love As a rule, if it is healthy for you it is healthy for your bird. I feed my birds a mixture of seeds and pellets that they have available all day. I also give them fresh fruit in the morning and fresh veggies in the evening. Most fruit is okay, but never feed any seeds from fresh fruit because the seeds are toxic to your birds. I don't feed any of my birds meat or chicken. There are several seed and pellet diets on the market today. I look for the ones with the most vitamin and mineral content. I also give my birds things like cheese toast and plain pasta. They love it! Eggs are okay for birds as long as they are boiled for 20 minutes to kill any bacteria. They love the shell too! Be sure to wash all the dishes that contain fresh food before giving your bird seed in that dish. Also wash the water dish every day. Birds have a way of enriching their water by dropping food in it. My pet grey, Idgie, loves to dunk her monkey biscuit and millet seed in her water before she eats it. Birds are like most kids. They will not make wise nutritional choices on their own and are usually afraid of trying new foods. Be patient when offering new food and be sure to keep offering it until the bird accepts it. Some foods that are accepted by birds are: broccoli, dried red chili peppers, sweet potatoes, cooked or raw carrots, squash, brussel sprouts, spinach, corn beans, red or green peppers, tomato, cauliflower, and greens. Fruits include apples ( a favorite ), pears, mango, papaya, apricots, cantaloupe, melon, and kiwi. Use fresh or frozen vegetables but stay away from canned because of the sodium content. Some birds can be wasteful. They will take a bite of food then drop it and go on to the next. Some eat every bite. Juices are okay also. No sodas please. Caffeine is toxic to your bird. Pasta, cooked rice, tortillas, and pizza crust are favorites. Be sure to check out our recipes for birdies.
